January 2007 | Political OutlookBangladesh's 14-party opposition alliance, led by the Awami League (AL), has announced that it will indeed contest the next general election, after the interim administration agreed to its key demands. Among these, President Iajuddin Ahmed has stepped down as head of caretaker government, and has appointed former central bank governor Fakhruddin Ahmed to succeed him in that role. In addition, the administration has agreed to reform the Election Commission, establish a new electoral register (the AL accused the existing list of containing as many as 14 million fake voter names), and set a new election date, having already postponed it
