Lame-Duck Ambitions
November 2006 | Ratings UpdateUS ambassador to India David Mulford has said that December's negotiations in the Republican-held 'lame-duck' Congress would likely result in a change in the law that would remove obstacles to a nuclear trade treaty by May. The deal, currently worth US$100bn, would overturn a three-decade trade ban on trade in civilian nuclear technology between the two countries. However, complications remain. The deal is not likely to meet approval under a Democratic-led Congress, and so failure to do so in the lame-duck sessions would effectively kill it.
