International Censure, Regional Appeasement
December 2006 | Political OutlookMyanmar has come under fire from a number of international bodies, but as ever, the ruling junta is buttressed by the commercial support of key Asian allies, though Thai bilateral relations are showing signs of wear. The United States is again pushing for the United Nations Security Council to censure the ruling State Peace and Development Council after a UN General Assembly human rights panel passed a resolution condemning Myanmar's unwillingness to investigate claims of political repression, torture and forced labour. Prospective Security Council action, which should focus mainly on refugee, drug and people smuggling issues, is unlikely to overcome
