Taiwan has urged China to do more to open its market to Taiwanese financial companies, following comments from Beijing that officials on the mainland were willing to discuss issues such as establishing cross-Strait financial supervision and financial business ties in the private sector. We have often highlighted that closer integration - made difficult by the strained political relations between the two - is crucial for Taiwan's future economic prosperity, given its close links with the mainland economy. Taiwanese companies have invested over US$100bn in China since the late 1980s, and Taiwan's banking executives have repeatedly stressed the need to invest
