Military Told To Respect Democracy

In a speech marking the 61st anniversary of the military on October 5, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged them continue with internal reform and respect democracy. The military was integral in the political system operated by former president Suharto, during his 32-years of iron rule that lasted until 1998, and was accused of human rights abuses. Yudhoyono has, however, strengthened democratic institutions since he came to power in 2004, and limited the threat that the military poses to civilian rule.
