Continued Gridlock In Peace Talks
October 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe Philippines missed a September 30 deadline for re-starting stalled peace talk with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) - the country's largest Muslim rebel group. The end-month deadline for presenting a new initiative was set following the breakdown of informal talks on September 6-7. Manila has been negotiating with MILF, which for 10 years has been demanding an enlarged homeland for around 3mn Muslims in the South, in an attempt to end decades of conflict that has killed more than 120,000 people and displaced over one million.
