New Leader To Continue Iron Rule

Junta leader Than Shwe has agreed to let his deputy, Shwe Mann, take over as commander-in-chief, paving the way for the junta's monopoly on power to continue once the 73 year-old's rein comes to an end. Mann, the military's chief of staff, has been personally groomed for the job by Shwe, an unpleasant thought for many given that he is generally considered both inside and outside the country to be a malicious leader, who puts personal interests ahead of the states'. The news comes soon after the UN Security Council placed Myanmar on its list of countries deemed a threat
