Deficit To Decline

BMI View: The Taiwanese government has outlined plans to improve public finances which, according to the Finance Ministry, will enable it to balance the budget by 2011. While the deficit has dropped from TWD310bn (US$9.45bn) in 2001 to TWD250bn (US$7.62bn or 2.1% of GDP) in 2005, we believe that this is a relatively optimistic goal.
