Myanmar: Asean Inches Away
August 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisThe Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (Asean) increasing dissatisfaction with the pace of reform in Myanmar could cost the insular State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) military junta a crucial ally. It appears as though Asean will edge closer to the EU and US position, and institutionally distance itself from Yangon. This leaves the prospects for diplomatically-driven progress on liberal political and economic reform could in a potentially irreparable state.
