The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has warned that renewed government efforts to associate it with the Jemaa Islamiyah (JI) Islamist militant group could jeopardise ongoing peace talks. A Filipino general recently claimed that suspected JI militants were hiding near MILF camps, and that the peace talks had made it difficult for the military to pursue them. The Philippine authorities believe that there are around 40 JI members hiding in the south of the archipelago, one group of 25 near MILF areas in Mindanao, and a smaller group of 15 on the island of Jolo with the Islamist Abu Sayyaf
