August 2005 | Risk SummaryPrime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is expected to call elections this year, according to Singapore's pro-government Straits Times daily. The newspaper quoted a parliament source as saying they expected Lee, who came to power in August 2004, to seek his own mandate as early as the last quarter of this year. Although a parliamentary election does not have to be held until mid-2007, Lee's predecessor, Goh Chok Tong, set a precedent for calling early elections in 1991 after only nine months in office in order to get public endorsement of his leadership.
