President Gloria Arroyo is facing growing calls to resign following allegations that she cheated in the May 2004 presidential election and that her family accepted pay-offs from operators of an illegal lottery. On July 13, tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets of the capital, Manila, in the biggest opposition demonstration since the crisis began some six weeks ago. But Arroyo, who took power in a 'people power' uprising in January 2001, is likely to survive the present crisis by accepting calls by the country's main political parties for constitutional reform. Congress is likely to begin the move
