April 2005 | Risk Summary

Megawati Sukarnoputri has been re-elected leader of the main opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) despite losing last year's presidential and legislative elections. Megawati was the only candidate at the March 28-March 31 conference after a controversial change to voting rules sidelined possible rivals. Megawati, who has led the PDI-P since 1999, will not revive the party's fortunes ahead of the next elections in 2009. The PDI-P has failed to mount an effective opposition to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono since its alliance with the Golkar party collapsed earlier this year.
