Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has visited Australia, on the first official trip by a Malaysian premier to Canberra in 20 years, to launch formal negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement with Australia and discuss its participation in the East Asia summit, which will be held in Malaysia later this year. Bilateral ties have been strained after Prime Minister John Howard's support for American foreign policy caused friction in the region. But Abdullah's visit should soothe tensions, strengthening Australian participation in regional trade and security arrangements.
