A Supreme Court decision upholding Anwar Ibrahim's conviction for corruption (for which he has already served his time) means that the former finance minister will be barred from active politics until 2008. Anwar will, however, be able to run for office in the next parliamentary elections, due in 2009. Ruling party UMNO has said that it does not want him back, which leaves open the possibility that Anwar will attempt to spearhead a coalition of opposition parties. For now, however, Anwar's ability to influence the domestic agenda appears
