A shift at the top of Laos' political pyramid will not fundamentally alter the country's direction. Indeed, the shuffle, spurred in part by the April National Assembly election, is akin to a game of musical chairs amongst senior officials. Choummaly Sayasone, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Laos People's Revolutionary Party, replaced Khatamy Siphandone as President. Bouasone Bouphavanh is the new Prime Minister. Bouasone identified fighting corruption and maintaining economic growth has his key priorities.
