Repression Continues

June 2006 | Ratings Update

The ruling military junta is proving impervious to UN, US and ASEAN calls for political liberalisation. In fact, authorities have recently intensified an ongoing violent campaign against both the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) and the Karen ethnic minority. Moreover, NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi's house arrest (enforced from her 1990 election victory until 1995, and then again from 2000) has been extended by one year. While such events are not wholly unexpected, the timing is disconcerting; both UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Malaysia, currently chairing ASEAN, have recently censured Myanmar.
