Poor Business Environment
March 2006 | Economic AnalysisAccording to data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows have declined from an annual average of US$67mn between 1992-1997, to just US$17mn in 2004. This decline comes at a time when the rest of South East Asia has been enjoying the benefits of steadily increasing FDI inflows. Large inflows over the next few years as a result of investment in the Nam Theun 2 dam project will reverse this trend, but it will only hide Laos' inability to attract investors in other sectors.
