In September, the government hosted the 37th ASEAN economic ministers meeting (AEM) as part of its commitments as chair of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). Addressing the AEM meeting, the prime minister, Bounyang Vorachit, said he was convinced that ASEAN membership and the establishment of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) were 'vital' for the country's prosperity.
