Having announced that an election for the Senate (the upper house) will be held in 2006, the government has now come up with a date: January 22. This followed passage of the new Senate election law by the National Assembly in May. The new law has changed the way in which Senators are elected by extending the vote to commune chiefs. This is proving controversial because the CPP has a much stronger position at the commune level compared to either FUNCINPEC or the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, so it now expected to win more seats.
