Vietnam looks highly unlikely to secure membership of the World Trade Organisation this year, with negotiations faltering over the pace of the communist government's reforms. Although deals have been made with 20 trading partners of 28 needed for membership in advance of the WTO's ministerial meeting in Hong Kong this December, the US has failed to support Vietnam's accession to the international trading body, which may have deterred support from other countries.
