During celebrations in September for the 60th anniversary of independence from French colonial rule, President Tran Duc Luong said that many people are still poor and that the political system is not effective. He called on the people to renovate the country and open its doors to the international community. The president's comments will be welcomed by foreign investors, who have often criticised corruption as being a major obstacle to doing business in Vietnam.
