In December a small bomb exploded in Yangon killing a university student. No one has claimed responsibility although the government has blamed "destructive elements" for the attacks. Bomb attacks in Myanmar are rare: a bomb exploded in Yangon in last June but prior to this the last recorded incident was in March 2003. While opposition to the government clearly exists both inside and outside the country, control by the security forces is extensive making it difficult for groups seeking to destabilise the government to operate.
