February 2005 | Risk SummaryThe World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that a global influenza pandemic, based around the deadly bird flu virus "may be imminent" and called for the development of a vaccine for the disease. The warning follows the death of another person in Vietnam, while up to 10 more cases are under investigation. So far, 38 people have died from bird flu in Vietnam and Thailand since the H5N1 virus was first discovered in poultry last year.
