Vietnam has announced that it is ready for talks on disputed territories in the South China Sea, which are claimed by a number of countries, including China, but a new defence white paper also underlines its claims in the region. The white paper insists that Vietnam is the rightful owner of the Paracel and Spratly islands, which are believed to be rich in oil and gas reserves, but in a rare briefing Deputy Defence Minister General Nguyen Huy Hieu said that 'Vietnam is ready for peaceful negotiations'.
