New Prime Minister, Old Tactics?

Senior General Than Shwe has overseen the toppling of the prime minister, Khin Nyunt, who has been replaced with Soe Win, one of his close allies. BMI View: It is dangerous to try and read too much into these developments in terms of their implications for political reform. However, the government will face intense pressure from its ASEAN allies to offer something concrete ahead of the ASEAN meeting in 2006 when Myanmar will hold the chairmanship.
