The military government has extended house arrest of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, for another year. In this context, the release of a number of political prisoners, including a high-profile student leader imprisoned since 1988, are more token than substantive. Despite internal and external opposition to the government, there is little to suggest its grip on power is slipping. By a combination of coercion and co-optation - not least the penetration of the armed forces into all spheres of life - the military has drawn an ever-increasing portion of the population
