Bangkok Poll Setback For Thaksin
September 2004 | Risk SummaryApirak Kosayodhin, a candidate from Thailand's main opposition Democrat Party, has been elected as the governor of Bangkok. The election is a setback for Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his Thai Rak Thai party, ahead of a general election, which must be called by January 2005 at the latest. Thaksin is hoping to win 400 out of 500 seats in the election, although the Bangkok poll suggest support may be waning. Despite the setback, Thaksin remains clear favourite for re-election.
