May 2004 | Risk SummaryThai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has appealed for calm in Thailand's three Muslim-dominated southern provinces. The appeal follows the death of over 100 Muslim militants at the end of April in a clash with Thai security forces, after the militants launched a series of attacks against Thai security positions. The violence has fueled fears of a resurgence of the separatist movement that was responsible for a series of similar anti-Bangkok attacks in the 1970s and 1980s.
