February 2004 | Risk SummaryThailand is to maintain martial law in the Muslim South part of the country. General Pongsak Eakbannasingh, who commands the southern regions where the majority of Thailand's six million Muslims live, said the decision was made because the situation in the southern regions has still not returned to normal. Martial law was first declared in January after an armed raid on an army camp by what is thought to be Muslim separatists, left four people dead.
