'Charter For Democracy'

The growing co-operation between Pakistan's former prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif has taken an important step with the signing of a 'charter of democracy'. The agreement signed by the two exiled opposition leaders in London, stresses the need to limit the role of the military in politics and establish a clear chain of command over nuclear arms. The significance of the charter could, however, be limited, with President Musharraf having vowed to block their return, although pressure from the US may force him to reconsider.Pakistan's short-term political rating remains 49, with the threats to Musharraf's power remaining
