Faint Hopes Of Peace
February 2006 | Ratings UpdateAfter nearly two months of escalating violence, peace-broker Norway and talks-host Switzerland have stepped up diplomatic moves to arrange face-to-face talks between Sri Lanka's warring parties. The Tigers have said they will only attend the Geneva talks to discuss the strict implementation of the ceasefire and not a political settlement to decades of ethnic bloodshed that has claimed more than 60,000 lives. Peace talks have been on hold since April 2003 and, with four previous peace attempts ending in failure, hopes of the Geneva talks succeeding are low.
