Increasing violence in northeast Sri Lanka has pushed the country to the edge of war. The Tigers have threatened to resume their armed struggle unless the government gives them a separate Tamil homeland with wide political powers in the north and east. But the fragile, three-year ceasefire is on the brink of collapse, with the two sides unable even to agree on a venue for talks.
