Missile Threatens US Ties
January 2006 | Ratings UpdateBilateral relations with America took a further hit in January, when at least 18 people were killed by missiles reportedly fired by a CIA-operated drone. The US airstrike, the latest in a series of attacks, missed its apparent target, al Qaeda’s number two, Ayman al Zawahri. Thousands of protesters from liberal and Islamic political groups joined an anti-US rally in Karachi in a rare show of solidarity, while many smaller demonstrations took place nationwide. The united opposition protest and growing anti-US sentiment in Pakistan raises political pressure on President Pervez Musharraf, an increasingly isolated supporter of America’s war on terror.
