Pledges Exceed Aid Target
December 2005 | Ratings UpdateInternational donors have pledged about US$5.8bn to assist with the recovery operation in the wake of the devastating October earthquake, according to Prime Minister Shautkat Aziz. The pledges, mostly in the form of low interest loans, came at an international donor conference in Islamabad in November, and bring the total above the US$5.2bn Pakistan had requested. The pledges came after UN criticism of the weak response and guarantees from Pakistan that the funds would be used in a transparent way. With about three million people homeless, the difficulty now is helping the worst affected through the cold winter
