In the deadliest spate of attacks since the 2002 ceasefire, six soldiers were killed in a claymore fragmentation mine attack by suspected Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka's war-torn north on December 4. According to the military, the attack bore the hallmarks of Tiger rebels, who have threatened to resume their armed struggle for a separate Tamil homeland in 2006 unless given political power over the island's north and east, where they run a de facto state.
