October 2005 | Political Risk AnalysisThe 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck near Muzaffrabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir in October, has wiped out entire villages, cutting off power and water supplies and destroying hospitals and schools. The official death toll is still rising; over 20,000 are currently estimated to have been killed, with a generation of young people wiped out in the areas worst hit. The United Nations said that an estimated 2.5mn people have been left homeless and the area remains at risk of an outbreak of disease.
