The European Union (EU) on September 26 barred Sri Lanka's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels from visiting its member states and said that it was considering listing the group as a terrorist organisation. The EU said that the Tamil Tiger's continuing use of violence and terrorism threatened the country's fragile peace process and that it would take steps where necessary to curb the rebels' illegal overseas fundraising. The rebel Tigers decried the EU travel ban on their cadres as unfair and dangerous, and a move which would gravely hurt the peace process.
