The Muttahida-e-Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) coalition of Islamic opposition parties called for nationwide rallies on 2 September to press their demand for the resignation of President Pervez Musharraf. The immediate trigger for the protests was the 1 September meeting between Pakistan's foreign minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri and his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom in Istanbul, which has been criticised as marking a u-turn on policies towards Palestine. The Islamists also oppose Musharraf's support for the US-led war on terror and his peace initiatives with India. While opposition protests are unlikely to pose any serious challenge for Musharraf's government which enjoys a comfortable majority
