August 2005 | Risk Summary

Pakistan has rounded up hundreds of suspected Islamic militants and ordered foreigners to leave its madrasas, or religious seminaries. President Pervez Musharraf, speaking on July 29, told reporters that he wanted the estimated 1,400 foreigners studying in Pakistan out of the country. 'We will not issue visas to such people,' he said. The move follows reports that at least one of the July 7 London bombers visited a madrasa during trips to Pakistan during the past year. Meanwhile, police have detained more than 600 suspected militants in a series of raids across the country.
