An attack on a holy site claimed by Hindus and Muslims risks fuelling communal conflict in India. Hardline Hindu groups blocked roads and closed shops in dozens of cities across the country on July 6 after suspected Islamic militants stormed the disputed site at Ayodhya. The unrest was, however, restrained compared with previous clashes over Ayodhya, where a makeshift Hindu temple has been constructed on the ruins of a sixteenth-century mosque torn down by a Hindu mob in 1992.
