Kashmir's Separatists Visit Pakistan
June 2005 | Risk SummaryLeaders of Kashmir's main separatist alliance, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, have said they are willing to ditch their demand for a UN plebiscite to settle the future of the divided Himalayan region. After talks with President Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the Hurriyat's moderate faction, told reporters that 'other possibilities' could be explored - but only if India is prepared to abandon the Shimla agreement which divides Kashmir along the 1947 ceasefire line. The statement is another sign of progress in the peace process.
