SAARC Summit Cancelled
February 2005 | Ratings UpdateDhaka's showcase opportunity to host a summit of South Asian nations in February fell through after the Indian prime minister cancelled his participation, expressing concern about deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh. The charter of the seven-member South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation requires all heads of member nations to attend its annual conference, which was already delayed after the tsunami hit the region. Though ministers called the decision unwarranted, Dhaka will be wary of damaging relations with New Delhi, currently strained after India demanded Bangladesh evict Indian rebels sheltering there. Meanwhile, opposition parties will use the cancellation to further snipe at government credibility.
