The increase in members takes place in mid-January and will be done on the basis of proportional representation so not affecting the balance of power between the ruling Bangladesh National Party and the opposition Awami League. The country's prime minister and the leader of the League are both women and this step represents a progressive move in a country where campaigns by radical Islamic groups against female participation in other sectors have been gaining
