Sri Lanka's coalition government has secured a working majority in parliament after the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) - a small party that represents Indian-origin Tamils - pledged its support but stopped short of joining the ruling alliance. The CWC has offered to back President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Freedom Alliance with its eight parliamentary seats providing the government majority in the 225-seat house for the first time since Kumaratunga's coalition won a snap April election. While the support of the Tamil party will help the government push ahead with legislation, it may destabilize the coalition. The CWC is sympathetic to the Tigers'
