Musharraf To Remain Army Chief
September 2004 | Risk SummaryPakistan's president, General Pervez Musharraf, has given the clearest sign yet that he plans to remain head of the armed forces next year. Musharraf, who took power in a bloodless coup in October 1999, told local television that most people wanted him to hold onto the post in 2005. Under a deal with the opposition Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, a six-party Islamic Alliance, Musharraf had said he would resign as army chief by December 2004.
