A split in the ranks of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels in early March threatened efforts to end the island's 20 year civil war. The Tigers, led by V. Prabhakaran expelled eastern commander V. Muralitharan - who goes by the nom de guerre Karuna - after he criticised the northern leadership. Though both factions have said they would abide by the Norwegian brokered truce with the government, the Norwegians suspended patrols in areas controlled by Karuna because the ceasefire agreement was signed by Prabhakaran.
