PM Warns On Rural Unrest

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has warned that illegal land seizures, and lack of proper compensation by local authorities are a key threat to rural instability. His comments were published a day after the government said that public disturbances in 2005 rose more than 6% compared with 2004. The premier's comments show how concerned the government is about rising unrest. While BMI agrees with Wen about the seriousness of the problem, we believe that the rising unrest does not at the moment present a threat to the Communist Party's monopoly on power.
