Ruling Party Loses Local Elections
December 2005 | Ratings UpdateTaiwan’s main opposition party, the KMT, defeated the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in local elections in early December, in what is being seen as a vote of no-confidence in President Chen Shui-bian. Overall, the KMT won 14 out of 23 mayoral and county magistrate posts, compared with just six for the DPP. The popularity of the president has been hit hard in recent months by a series of corruption scandals in the DPP party. The main winner from the election was the KMT’s new leader, Ma Ying-jeou, who is now expected to be the party’s presidential candidate for the 2008 election
