Arms Package Creates Tensions
November 2005 | Economic AnalysisTaiwanese President Chen Shui-bian is increasing pressure on opposition lawmakers to approve a controversial US$11bn arms package from the US. The package was first offered by US President George W Bush in 2001, but has yet to receive approval from the opposition-controlled parliament amid continued concerns about the cost and effectiveness of the weapons. The US is growing increasingly annoyed by the delay, with some government officials publicly questioning whether the US should seek to defend an island which is showing little interest in defending itself.
